Glossary of Java Haute Terms

 
americano - espresso mixed with hot water.  This beverage is named after WWII GI's who added water to their espresso to make it more like American coffee.

breve (brev-ay) - a latte prepared by steaming 1/2 & 1/2 instead of milk

cafe aulait (kaf-ey oh ley) - prepared by mixing 1/2 regular coffee and 1/2 steamed milk; French for "coffee with milk"

cappuccino (kap-oo-chee-noh) - a drink that is traditionally 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 frothed milk

chai - an Indian drink prepared from tea and spices.  In America it is usually mixed with steamed milk.

dry cappuccino - made using very little steamed milk and extra frothed milk

espresso - a strong coffee prepared by forcing live steam under pressure through ground dark-roast coffee beans

grande (gran-dey) - 16 oz Java Haute Drink

harmless - any drink prepared using decaf and skim milk

shot in the dark - regular coffee with a shot of espresso added to give it that extra kick

skinny - any drink prepared using skim milk

sleeper - any drink prepared using decaf coffee or espresso

tazza (ta-zuh) - 24 oz Java Haute Drink

vivace (vi-vah-chey) - 20 oz Java Haute Drink
